National airline Fiji Airways began its first commercial flights to Canberra last Friday.
The inaugural flight will be first of two weekly flights by Fiji Airways to the Australian capital city.
Company global sales executive manager Akuila Batiweti said the start of the new service was a historic occasion for the airline.
“This new route marks a significant milestone in our journey to redefine Fiji Airways as the best and as a world leading airline capable of standing among the best,” he said.
“Australia is by far our largest and most important source market for tourism and its capital Canberra has always been on our radar.
“It was only a matter of time ensuring all of the necessary preparations were in place.
“With the new service we are not only bridging the distance between Fiji and Australia’s capital but also building a stronger bond between our two governments and our people.”
He said Fiji stood to also benefit from the new route.
“Through increased connectivity we can enhance cultural exchanges, strengthen trade relationships and promote economic growth.
“As we expand our horizons we seek to create more opportunities for our customers, our employees and the communities that we serve.
“This new route to Canberra represents a stepping stone towards achieving that vision.”
He added that Fiji Airways was the first airline to recommence international flights to and from Canberra following the global pandemic.
“This is a clear indication that we are setting the pace within this region and one of the reasons we have been named the best Skytrax Airlines and Best Staff in Australia and the Pacific.
“Starting today the best airline in the region offers twice weekly flights between Nadi and Canberra every Tuesday and Friday and I am happy to announce that we will have a third service starting from October, 2023.”
