Members of the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s side got valuable game time yesterday with two friendly matches against the Japan 7s side at Albert Park in Suva.
The two matches allowed former rep Sireli Bobo to test a handful of new players with the Singapore 7s set to get underway next month.
Skipper for the day, Netava Koroisau, said the main purpose of the friendly match was to provide game time for players who missed out on the Hong Kong 7s, as well as for the new players in the squad.
“Our head coach Osea Kolinisau and the rest of the players, the majority of whom returned from the Hong Kong 7s, are training at the Sand Dunes in Sigatoka. The players you see today are those who did not get picked for certain tournaments and new players in the team,” Koroisau said.
The site featured new players such as Army’s Waisale Leiroti, Saunaka prop Lasaro Bogisa, Akuila Momo, Rupeni Kabu and Solomoni Nakulanisa.
“We are happy to be able to come out and play against Japan, one of the top teams that played on the HSBC Series,” Koroisau said.
He said the matches yesterday allowed the side to work on areas that needed attention on as they prepare for the upcoming Singapore 7s.
“We were able to spot some of the things we need to work on like our defence, speed, and other areas.”
The Singapore 7s will be held on May 3-5.
