David Toganivalu has been appointed the new acting Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, says Attorney-General Siromi Turaga.

Mr Turaga said he would meet Mr Toganivalu on Monday when he takes up his new role.

“He received his appointment today (yesterday),” said Mr Turaga.

“He will be getting an acting allowance, which is a right for him, but it will not be at 75 per cent.”

The Attorney-General said Mr Toganivalu had over 20 years of experience.

“I am sure the officers from FICAC, those in prosecutions, will benefit greatly and, of course, there will be someone appointed to the position soon. I will be meeting with him on Monday to chart a way forward”.

“Let me reassure you that they will continue in terms of the prosecution of corruption cases.

“A lot of cases do not reach court. That is a fact. So, now we are going to prioritise on getting those files to court.”

The Attorney-General said that at the end of the day, people must trust the rule of law and the justice system.

“What is the point of prosecuting someone who bribed someone $50 for a traffic ticket but you do not prosecute someone who was bribed with $10 million.

“It appears at one time we were more focused on the smaller fish than the big guys. That is going to change.”

In a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the appointment will be from September 25 to November 25.

Mr Toganivalu also said he was honoured to take on the role and he looked forward to working with the staff of FICAC to see how investigation and prosecution of corruption-related matters could be improved.
