THE Suva City Council and 70th FMF Hibiscus Festival Committee will take full responsibility for protecting and maintaining Albert Park before, during and after the festival.
This was shared by Festival chairperson Dr John Fatiaki after concerns were raised over the maintenance of the ground, which was closed for rehabilitation work last year and has since been subject to measures aimed at protecting its playing surface.
Dr Fatiaki said the organisers recognised the investment made in developing and maintaining Albert Park and shared the public’s interest in ensuring the grounds were properly protected.
He said engineers had assessed the site and established clear weight restrictions for all stalls, amusement rides, staging and other festival infrastructure.
“Every vendor and operator has been advised of these requirements and must comply with the approved limits and installation procedures,” Dr Fatiaki said.
“These measures have been put in place specifically to minimise pressure on the grounds and prevent damage.”
Dr Fatiaki said compliance would be monitored throughout the setup, festival and dismantling periods.
“Albert Park is under the responsibility of the Suva City Council, which is also an organiser of the FMF Hibiscus Festival.”
Dr Fatiaki said organisers were also mindful of the cultural and historical importance of the Hibiscus Festival to the people of Suva and Fiji.
He said the return of the festival to Albert Park for its 70th anniversary was expected to revive memories of past celebrations while creating new ones for another generation.
“The safety of festival goers, vendors and workers remains our highest priority.”
