The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children in Fiji (FENC) has supported more than 7000 children with their education this year.

In their ongoing efforts to keep supporting underprivileged students, FENC staged its annual walk-a-thon in Lautoka last Saturday. The event drew about 100 participants who walked from Shirley Park to Natabua High School.

FENC CEO Nirmala Nambiar said the 7000 children excluded those whose houses were destroyed by fire, and those impacted by domestic violence.

“We have done the walk-a-thon and we are looking at also doing a walk-a-thon in Labasa and a dinner fundraiser to support the extra income that we raise,” he said.

“We are looking at raising $3000 to $4000, and there are those who have already pledged their support and have sent money to our bank account.”

Officiating at the event, Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) president Dr Ram Raju said FENC Fiji had supported underprivileged students by allowing them a decent education from primary to secondary school level.

“Every year they’ve continued to raise funds,” Dr Raju said. “And the underprivileged are not left behind.

“So FENC Fiji is providing a lot of financial support, and the underprivileged people can invest in their education and expose their potential through this organisation.”

Dr Raju, who participated in the walk-a-thon for the first time, donated $500 while the Sugar Cane Growers Fund also made a cash contribution.
