Positive feedback has been received with the conversion to cash under the food voucher system, says Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Lynda Tabuya.
“In fact, we have had positive feedback from this because our people in the rural and maritime areas can now go to their corner shops, they can go to their canteens,” Ms Tabuya told reporters this week.
The system includes sending money via M-paisa to wherever they can to get their goods.
Ms Tabuya said previously it was limited to only purchasing supplies from MaxVal-U supermarket.
Recipients from Vatulele had to go to Navua to purchase goods from the designated supermarket.
“So, they’ve already spent money travelling and this has been done for years, so converting it into cash, they now have that freedom to shop in the market and other shops,” Ms Tabuya said.
“This is a better way to do it, so recipients have the freedom to spend that cash.”
