SABETO, Nadi, farmer Chandar Kant says an unreliable water supply has forced him to depend on a borehole to sustain his family and vegetable farm.

Mr Kant grows eggplants, watermelons, cabbages and beans, but frequent disruptions to Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) supply and dry weather have made farming increasingly challenging.

“The government line is a big problem, that’s why we have the borehole,” he said.

That government line closes almost every day, so we don’t rely much on it now.”

His household of 12 must wake before 6am to store enough water for daily needs, while a pump fills three or four tanks from the borehole.
