“I took them in and provided a shelter for them and some of their family members and they have already harvested 400 tonnes of my cane,” Mr Kishore said.

“I am so thankful I took in these young men who did the job, and I provided food and everything for them for three weeks before they could provide for themselves.

“They are very hardworking people and I am blessed I recruited these youths to do the job for me and I have not regretted my decision to employ them.”

Mr Kishore said they harvested the 400 tonnes of cane in four weeks and they had moved to another farmer, also on Qalitu on the Lautoka outskirts.

The 71-year-old grower said this was a perfect time to reach out and help people because everyone was struggling to make a living.

He said these youths did the job required of them and he was thankful he could secure good labourers to assist him harvest his cane during this crushing season.
