A FAMILY in Waila, Nausori is reeling from the loss of their home after a fire destroyed their house on Friday evening.

The blaze occurred around 9.30pm while the family members were attending a prayer session in their area.

The family suspects the fire may have been deliberately set following a suspected break-in.

Hari Ram, the head of the household, told The Fiji Times they discovered some of their belongings scattered outside the home, which raised concern of theft.

“We believe someone broke into our house and then started the fire,” Mr Ram said.

“Some of our things were found outside, which we didn’t leave there. It looked like someone was going through our belongings.”

The family was now left without a home, and the incident has sparked fear and frustration among residents in the area.

The Ram family had been living in Waila for more than 30 years and are currently taking shelter at their neighbour’s house.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but an investigation was underway.

Police and fire officials were at the scene shortly after the blaze was reported and were continuing inquiries.

No injuries were reported, but the loss of property had left the family seeking urgent shelter and support.

Anyone with information related to the incident was urged to contact the nearest police station.
