FOR the Naceba and Bautarua families of Welagi, Taveuni, getting to see the FIJI Water Flying Fijians squad train beside their house for a week is an opportunity of a lifetime.
Viliame Bautarua, 57, says he has attended to his yaqona and dalo farms the past five days — only to watch the Flying Fijians train.
Bautarua house is situated beside the Welagi Ground where the Flying Fijians are based for a week.
“I just sit under this coconut tree. Even when they are not training, I just sit here and watch what they do after training,” Bautarua said.
“I know I will not get this opportunity to watch them running in front of me again. I have always watched them on television and getting to see them training everyday beside my house is just
a blessing.”
He said the children of Taveuni have been inspired since the Flying Fijians arrived on Saturday.
“I have been talking to the kids. They have not missed any sessions. It’s hard to convince them to go to school even, as they do not want to miss a session.”
He said the villagers got to know about the camp a fortnight ago when the village heads called for a meeting.
“We are all surprised and happy when we got to know about it.
“Everyone had been looking forward to seeing them and now that they are here, it’s just amazing.”
The Flying Fijians are based on Taveuni until Saturday.
