OPPOSITION MP Jone Usamate has warned that fame should not be the main reason for anybody entering politics, saying potential candidates must have a solid grasp of governance and national policies.
Mr Usamate said a healthy balance between popularity and competence would be critical heading into next year’s general election.
“It is not good to have people who are popular but lack the ability to implement effective policies,” Mr Usamate said.
His observations follow reports of a former national sevens rugby player considering entering the political arena.
“Policies implemented in Parliament impact people for many years, and good policies leave a lasting and positive effect.”
Mr Usamate noted that the issue was not new, saying that some former MPs had entered Parliament based purely on their fame, despite lacking the knowledge required for national leadership.
“They need to know the policies and their implications.”
Mr Usamate said voters must demand more than celebrity status from their representatives, insisting that policy experience and an understanding of governance must be non-negotiable.
