Olivia Luisa Gade, who grew up as an only child in an extended family, says her upbringing taught her to respect her elders, care for others and always put God first.
The 22-year-old is from the village of Naselesele, Taveuni, and has maternal links to Nawi Village in Buca Bay.
Ms Olivia said she would use this year’s Hibiscus Festival to speak up on issues affecting Fijian communities, including drugs, discrimination, racism and abuse.
“I believe that every youth, every individual who is hearing my voice, that they have a purpose,” she said.
“That their upbringing should not determine what they can do in the future, they are greater than what they go through.”
Ms Olivia said her faith had also shaped her life, sharing her favourite Bible verse.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
She is sponsored by Mali Pest Control and Hygiene and wants to highlight the work of people in that industry “who are often overlooked”.
