After a successful Tri-Nations over the weekend, the Fiji Amateur Boxing team is now setting its sights on the upcoming Australian Golden Gloves competition.
This is scheduled to take place in Australia at the end of the month.
The team is gearing up to send a mixture of junior, youth, and elite boxers to compete in the event.
Head coach Cam Todd reflected on the recent competition, highlighting the strong performances of the young boxers during the two-day event.
Team Fiji achieved significant success, securing a commendable number of medals, surpassing their previous performance when faced with the Australian team last year.
“The two days of competition was really good we had some great performances from our young boxers,” said Todd.
“I was very happy with the overall tournament. It was first time for Samoa to come here, and I think they really enjoyed themselves and it also shows how strong they are as well.”
He adds the presence of a sizable Australian team with 31 boxers had a positive impact on the tournament
“This was a massive team from Australia with 31 boxers, and it made a big difference to the tournament.
“The Australian coaches were very impressed with the growth and improvement of our young boxers.”
The tournament served as a valuable learning experience for both the athletes and local coaches, exposing them to the standards expected in international boxing.
“We have learned that while we are improving, we still have a lot of work to do I think our local coaches have learned the standards that are expected for international boxing and hosting at the FMF Gymnasium was a big learning experience for all of us, so we’ll be better prepared for next time.
Looking ahead to the Australian Golden Gloves competition, Todd emphasised the team’s readiness and anticipation for the challenging event.
“We are getting ready for a trip to the Australian golden gloves which is later this month, and it will be a mixture of junior and youth and elite boxers
“Really appreciated the support from the local people, it makes a big difference to us, and I hope that with our coming tournaments more and more people will get involved.”
