THE Opposition had considered the names of President elect Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere for the post of President.
Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu said this while congratulating the Tui Cakau who was eventually elected over their eventual nominee, Vuda chief Ratu Meli Tavaiqia.
He said while the Opposition placed importance in providing alternatives, “the people has ultimately spoken” with the election of Ratu Naiqama.
“Today in the people’s House, the voice of the people has been heard and for all Fijians, congratulations to Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu,” said Mr Seruiratu.
“He is our President, and we all have to support him.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with him, and we wish him well during his tenure in office.
“I hope he will lead wisely and serve proudly.”
The Opposition Leader said his nomination of Ratu Meli was in accordance with the 2013 Constitution.
“The Constitution allows for the Leader of the Opposition to come up with an alternative.
“We are the alternative government, and it is always good to come up with alternatives.
“I have stated already, that nobody is irreplaceable. We have to always look at the best options for the country.
“For us as the Leader of the Opposition, we are bringing those options as well for the benefit of the country.”
