The Fiji football under-15 team received an emotional farewell in Ba yesterday before their departure to Wellington, New Zealand, for the OFC U15 Development Tournament tomorrow.
Sixteen young players will represent the nation in this international event, with team captain Isoa Baselala expressing his pride in leading the side.
“I’m honoured to lead the team on and off the field. It’s a huge honour and I’m thankful for the opportunity,” Baselala said.
Unfortunately, one of the selected players, Adnaan Ahmad had to be dropped from the squad because of a recent bout of dengue fever. However, officials confirmed he has recovered well.
Head coach Marika Rodu took the opportunity to remind parents of their vital role in their children’s development both on and off the field.
“Parents, keep an eye on your boys. It’s your responsibility to ensure they are training in the right environment, eating well, and staying hydrated,” Rodu said.
He highlighted the many social challenges facing young people in Fiji today, especially the rising issue of drug abuse.
“At this stage, the boys are still growing, and they can be easily swayed to the right or the left. This is the time they need direction. Guide them, confirm what is right and what is wrong. This time will never come back. Guide them to become better people,” he urged.
In response, parent Kafoa Danford thanked the Fiji Football Association and the coaching team for their dedication to the players’ development.
