A TRANSGENDER sex worker who went public in an Australian documentary that exposed a drug and prostitution ring in Suva has gone underground. Elaine Monroe fears for the safety of family members after participating in an SBS documentary as a sex worker who highlighted the relative ease of access to methamphetamine on the streets.
Elaine is now seeking support from the public and looking to authorities for protection. “After that document went viral, my life is in danger,” Elaine said.
“I have been threatened, my family has been threatened, and I am here to seek the support of the public to protect me and my family.”
Elaine claimed the documentary, which attempted to uncover the ‘ice’ problem in Fiji, was “the most dangerous cause anyone could take up”.
“What I’ve done is only scraping the tip of the iceberg.”
Elaine said there were many people involved in the industry in different levels of distribution and manufacturing.
“I am a huge threat to these people and by telling my story of overcoming my ice addiction, they have threatened my life and my well-being.
“It is very important for the public to know this because we are together fighting very dangerous people and a billion dollar industry that is being protected by powerful people.
“But I hope in telling my story that you are made aware of what is happening to our people, what is happening to our youths, what is happening to your children and what can happen to our future if we do not fight this problem of ice in our country.”
