The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) states it has been in touch with Energy Fiji Limited over an oil discharge from its depot in Sigatoka.
The Ministry said its Waste and Pollution Control Team was deployed to conduct inspection at the site.
It was ascertained the discharge was from the separator pit at the EFL Sigatoka Powerhouse due to heavy rainfall.
“The MECC officer had met with the Turaga ni Koro from Nasama and briefed him accordingly,” said the Ministry.
“EFL had deployed their response kit; however, it was deemed by the community to be ineffective to control the issue on hand.”
The Ministry added it is liaising with EFL and working to contain the oil discharge.
