Effective border control mechanisms are essential for combating the alarming drug issue plaguing our nation, says Deputy Prime and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

During a visit to the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) office in Nadi and Lautoka on Wednesday, Prof Prasad said the event underscored pressing issues concerning border control, tax compliance, challenges faced by staff members and fostering a positive relationship with taxpayers.

“We must work tirelessly to ensure our borders remain secure,” he said.

Prof Prasad also reiterated the importance of tax compliance.

“Those who should pay tax must pay tax.

“Income generation is pivotal in sustaining government services and ensuring uninterrupted progress within our society.”

While acknowledging that the Government’s priorities continued to be on debt reduction and fiscal consolidation, Prof Prasad underlined the continued significance of revenue collection.

“Our work does not end here. Revenue collection remains a critical component in our efforts to sustain economic stability and provide essential services to our citizens.”

FRCS staff members also had the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to the minister.

In response, Prof Prasad said the wellbeing of FRCS staff members was paramount.

“We are committed to addressing the challenges faced by our dedicated employees and ensuring they have the support they need to carry out their duties effectively,” he said.
