SEAQAQA market vendor Anaseini Masiyalewa says some fishermen are no longer going out to fish because of the rising cost of fuel, leading to a shortage of fresh fish supply at the local market.

Ms Masiyalewa said this situation had directly affected their business operations, as vendors relied on local fishermen for fresh fish which were cooked and sold daily.

“Fishermen are not going out to fish because of the increase in fuel prices. This has also affected our business because we usually buy fish from them for our food parcels,” she said.

She said supply to the market had dropped significantly, depriving customers of affordable options for protein.

“We had to adjust our business operations due to the shortage, while others have shifted to selling frozen fish, which comes at a higher cost.”

She said they had also seen a decline in customer turnout since the supply of seafood had reduced, affecting their daily income and overall sales.
