THE Online Safety Commission says it is exploring steps to take down the Fiji Exposed Forum page on popular social media platform Facebook.
Commissioner Anne Dunn made the revelation during the Western Youth Conference at the Tanoa International Hotel yesterday.
She was responding to a question from global youth ambassador for Fiji, Patrick Lal.
“We have forums on Facebook such as Fiji Exposed Forum and there are a lot of things people post about other people. And if someone tomorrow posts something about me, I can always block them but what about other people in the world,” Mr Lal said.
“It is very embarrassing for us and mentally tarnishes a person — why have we not yet closed Fiji Exposed Forum?”
Ms Dunn responded by saying the commission had just recently been established and he should have lodged a complaint with police.
“In terms of those types of things, those are different platforms and different networks that we would really like to be able to work with, the (Fiji Police Force) Cybercrime Unit, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports to be able to dive into what actually is the point of running forums such as Fiji Exposed Forum on Facebook,” she said.
“I can’t answer the question of why we haven’t taken it down because the Online Safety Commission does not have that authority according to the Online Safety Act, in terms of taking it down.
“But we do want to be able to pile together information to be able to go to Facebook and say this is really affecting people in our country and we would like to have a dialogue on how we could take this down.”
