This year’s Girmit Day commemoration will be held in Lautoka and Labasa to mark the 145th year of the arrival of the indentured labourers.
The commemoration event will be held at the Lautoka Girmit Multicultural Centre from May 11 to 13, and in Labasa on May 11.
A post-Cabinet release stated the theme of this year’s Girmit Day would be Journey of Girmit Descendants in Building a New Fiji.
“The theme is also aligned to the objectives of the Coalition Government in terms of promoting social-cohesion and celebrating the contribution of various ethnic communities in the development and progress of Fiji and its people together,” it stated.
Cabinet also agreed that a subcommittee would organise and oversee the Girmit Day commemoration program.
