Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson is expected to reshuffle his squad as the team prepares for round nine of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific clash against the Highlanders this weekend.

The changes follow a tough stretch of injuries and inconsistent performances, with vice-captain and star halfback Frank Lomani ruled out for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery.

“Frank’s pretty gutted. He’s had ongoing issues with his shoulder and this latest setback is tough on him and the club,” Jackson said.

Lock Etonia Waqa is also unavailable this week due to HIA (head injury assessment) protocols, while captain Tevita Ikanivere may be rested, despite being fit, to allow the squad’s depth at hooker to shine.

In Lomani’s absence, hooker Mesulame Dolokoto will take over captaincy duties.

“Mesulame Dolokoto will take over as a vice captain slash captain. So, he’s been a great leader for us as well off the field. He will take over the leadership and we got Iosefo Masi in the background, that will be looking after that side as well,” Jackson said.

After fielding a six-two bench in the 12-31 loss against the Crusaders last week, the Drua will revert to a more balanced selection.

Jackson emphasised the importance of game management, especially after a disappointing first 15 minutes against the Crusaders.

“We need to be smarter with our kicking game,” he said.

Off the field, Jackson said the coaching team has focused on restoring player confidence and easing pressure that comes with public expectation.

“There’s a bit of tension which is understandable after two playoff years, but we want the boys to enjoy playing the Fijian way again,” he said.

With seven games left in the regular season, Jackson believes the next three will define their playoff hopes.

“If we can win these next three, we’re back in the top six conversation,” he said.

The Drua face the Highlanders next in what Jackson calls a “must-win” match before a string of home games that could define their campaign.

Meanwhile, the game will kick off at 7.05pm at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
