“Let us not write us off just yet.”
This is the message from Swire Shipping Fijian Drua chief executive Mark Evans as the team gears up for its round 12 Super Rugby Pacific match against the Queensland Reds tomorrow.
With only four games left for the season and a slim opportunity to find itself within the top six, he gave a blunt outlook on the team’s chances.
“We still got four games to play so let’s not write us off just yet but I fully accept even with three games at home, we probably won’t get to six,” Evans explained.
“Probably we might, probably not.”
With this in mind, he reflected on previous seasons where the Drua managed to find favour when matches would get down to the wire.
“Every close game went our way, I can’t hardly remember again where we got really tight and didn’t quite close it,” he recalled.
“I mean, we only lost one home game in the first year, and the Blues thumped us so we didn’t get close to winning there last year, we lost one home game and the ‘Canes (Hurricanes).”
For this season however, he pointed out the losses were incurred at a close points difference.
“The difference is this year, the close games we’ve lost. We went real close against the Brumbies at home and to a degree, away, and didn’t close it,” he highlighted.
“My point is this; things are never as good as you think they are, and they’re never as bad as you think they are and the margin is tiny.”
The Drua face the Reds at 2.05pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
