Drought affects Tonga

NUKU’ALOFA – The prolonged drought in Tonga has forced the people of the island of ‘Eua to ration their water supply.

Radio Tonga’s correspondent on the island, Setaleki Tukia reported that Sainai prison had to borrow water from the fire department for their daily use last week.

He said many areas on the island were affected by the shortage and problems associated with water supplies.

“Government’s representative on ‘Eua, called the fire department and asked them to provide two tanks of water to cater for the needs of inmates at Sainai prison, said Tukia.

He said the people of ‘Eua were struggling during this prolonged drought period.

The General Manager of the Tonga Water Board, Saimone Helu says he was in ‘Eua last weekend and the water supply managed by the board was supplying water to everyone on the island.
