THE Capital Insurance Dreketi Rugby Club emerged as champions of the Rewa Rugby Union 10s tournament in Nausori last weekend.

The Dreketi team walked away with $1000 in prize money after defeating Kuku at the one-day tournament which took place at the Lokia Sports Ground.

The runners-up walked away with $500.

The winning team’s manager Jone Ravai expressed his side’s joy and thrill at their newfound win and fortune, while noting the team needed to address certain areas before advancing into the 15s code.

“This is a good start for us. While we celebrate our victory here, we recognise that we are still in the early stages and there are areas we need to improve on before the full 15s season begins next month,” Ravai said.

Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Filipe Tuisawau was present at the event as patron.

Registration for the tournament closed on the 24th of last month with a fee of $300 for the first 10 teams and was open to all affiliated clubs and those interested.

The prize money was initially set at $600 for the winners and $400 for runners-up which was increased to the amount that the Dreketi and Kuku teams walked away with.

Saturday’s one-day tournament is the union’s first event on the calendar, as it expressed on social media what it forecasts as a dynamic year for Rewa rugby.

“This year we call on every player, coach, official and supporter to embrace the season ahead with the true spirit of Rewa rugby,” the statement said.

“Let us continue to build on our legacy, uphold the values of sportsmanship and strive for excellence both on and off the field.”
