AT just 14 years old, Besila Faith Drauna is concerned about the growing issue of substance abuse among young people, with some children her age now being admitted to St Giles Hospital for rehabilitation.
The concern has inspired the Naseakula District School student to take part in this year’s FMF Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival, where she hopes to use her platform to promote awareness and encourage youths to make safer choices.
Ms Drauna, who is one of four contestants vying for the Miss Drive Smart crown, said she wanted to be a voice for young people facing challenges linked to substance abuse, bluetoothing and risky behaviours.
She said her advocacy would focus on bluetoothing and the importance of responsible decision-making among youths.
“I will not just stand as a contestant but as a voice for awareness,” she said.
“Behind the glamour of youth gatherings and social scenes, there are hidden risks that many do not openly discuss.”
She said bluetoothing was not just a trend but a harmful behaviour that could put young people’s lives at risk and expose them to serious health consequences, including the spread of life-threatening diseases and substance-related harm.
“The increase in risky behaviours has contributed to concerns surrounding the rise in HIV cases in Fiji.
“According to available data,in the first six months of 2025, Fiji recorded 1226 new HIV cases, following 1583 new cases in 2024.
“More than 4720 new HIV infections have been recorded over the past decade, with about 80 per cent of new cases occurring among people aged between 15 and 34 years.”
She said those figures showed that HIV was not only a health issue but also a concern affecting young people.
“As young leaders, we cannot remain silent. Our strength lies not only in our sash, but in our courage to speak up for those who may not have a voice.
“We must educate, protect, and guide our peers towards safer choices and brighter futures.”
She said she hoped her participation in the carnival would encourage youths to reject harmful practices and choose a healthier path.
The FMF Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival is in progress at Subrail Park, Labasa, this week.
