The Public Service Commission (PSC) has announced the appointment of Dr Vinesh Kumar as the incoming permanent secretary for the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry.

In a statement, PSC chairman Luke Rokovada said the appointment was made with the agreement of the Prime Minister.

He confirmed Dr Kumar’s appointment followed a transparent and merit-based recruitment process conducted in May 2025.

Mr Rokovada said the commission interviewed five shortlisted candidates on May 20, 2025 and agreed to recommend Dr Vinesh Kumar, who performed outstandingly in the interview, to be offered the position.

“Following due diligence, the Hon Prime Minister agreed to Dr Kumar’s appointment on June 12, 2025,” Mr Rokovada said.

“Dr Kumar brings to the role extensive experience in public service, along with a strong background in leadership, governance and policy implementation.

“The commission is confident that his appointment will further strengthen the ministry’s effort in revitalising the sugar sector and promoting inclusive programs that support the needs of Fiji’s multi-ethnic communities.”

At an event in Lautoka two weeks ago, the acting permanent secretary of the ministry, Reshmi Kumari, was publicly scolded by the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh.

Confirming Dr Kumar’s appointment, Mr Singh said Ms Kumari will revert to her old position in the Ministry of Sugar as director policy research.
