Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has reiterated his political journey was never driven by personal ambition, but by a mission to restore democracy and good governance in Fiji.

When asked about a social media post by Lynda Tabuya, Mr Kamikamica clarified that becoming prime minister was never his goal.

“This journey was never about being prime minister for me,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“It was about removing a government that was so arrogant, mismanaged the country and intimidated everybody.

“My objective was to get rid of them and allow for democracy and freedom of speech to return.”

He stressed his appointment as DPM and deputy leader of the People’s Alliance party was not something he lobbied for.

“I never asked the Prime Minister to be Deputy Prime Minister or deputy leader,” he said.

“That was decided by him.

“If you work hard enough, people will recognise your contributions. You don’t have to go around begging everybody for your positions.”

Responding more broadly to Fiji’s progress under the Government, he pointed to recent developments that reflected genuine economic transformation.

“We’ve got Google now in Fiji, and we’ve got Starlink. These are going to create tremendous opportunities for young people in tech-related work and businesses.

“I’d like to think that this Government doesn’t just talk — it shows action.

“That’s the most important thing for us: re-engineering the economic architecture and pushing industries like kava to their full potential.”
