Double Oceania gold for Kiwi judokas

Update: 4:42PM Moira De Villiers and Jason Koster continued on track for next year’s Rio Olympics in winning gold at the Oceania judo championships in Noumea.

De Villiers, who contested the 70kg class, now has won six consecutive Oceania titles while Koster, competing in the 100kg division, has three on end.

New Zealand also collected four silvers and two bronze medals in what national coach Robert Levy described as an impressive performance.

Levy said in addition to Kosters and De Villiers, Adrian Leat, Ivica Pavlinic and Darcina Manuel had shown they were ready to challenge for a spot at the Rio de Janiero Games.

De Villiers is ranked 18th in the world, with the top 14 women qualifying for an Olympics berth in the initial quota.

Koster is 19th, with the top 22 men qualifying directly for Rio.

A further seven men and three women will also qualify from the Oceania region through the International Judo Federation’s continental representation quota.
