REPORTS of dog attacks on tourists and locals in Nadi continue to be an issue of concern for the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In its official budget submission to the Finance Ministry this week, chamber president Dr Ram Raju said the issue was not being taken care of by relevant authorities.
“A survey done in the West recently revealed that a private doctor or general practitioners treat five to 10 dog bites a year, which equates to approximately 250 cases alone reported by the general practitioners,” Dr Raju said.
“Some serious cases have been reported among the tourists and one of whom lost part of his finger and had to undergo further treatment in the United States.”
He said dogs barking at night were also a nuisance.
“Too many dogs barking at night have prompted tourists complaining of this noise pollution as well.
“Dog trapping and or poisoning must be conducted at regular intervals to eradicate this burgeoning problem.”
The general practitioner said other stray animals should also be controlled by authorities.
“We also see horses, cows and cats running across roads or blocking the roads especially in Martintar, Denarau, Wailoaloa and Enamanu roads.
“Many dogs and cats are also seen dead on the roads.”
