Team Fiji athletes for the Pacific Mini Games were reminded yesterday to do their best as national representatives by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru.

The national contingent presented its iTatau to the Youth and Sports Minister at the FMF Gymnasium as he urged them to be good representatives of Fiji.

“I wish to remind you that as national representatives, you all have an obligation to perform to the best of your abilities and to be good ambassadors on and off the field,” Saukuru told the athletes.

“Represent our nation with passion and pride, giving your best while you have the opportunity to do it for those who missed, for your family and for Fiji.”

He also referred to a Bible verse in his address to encourage athletes taking part for Fiji in the Mini Games.

“I’m reminded of the Bible phrase in Matthew 22:14 and I quote ‘Many are called but few are chosen’ unquote. And you are the chosen few of the many who vied for a spot in your respective spots to represent Fiji at the Mini Pacific Games,” he emphasised.

The Sports Minister also reminded the athletes to have camaraderie, especially when going up against other formidable athletes from around the region.

“Whilst the Games bring about the opportunity to test and showcase your skills, the competitions you partake in will entail participating against the best athletes from around the Pacific,” he told the athletes.

“Hence, the need to support and be there for each other is of paramount importance.”

A total of 186 athletes and officials will represent Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games this year.

This includes 73 male and 63 female athletes with 50 officials.

The Pacific Mini Games will take place from June 29 to July 9 in Koror, Palau.
