Viti Roofing Devo Babas men’s team left Police Blue behind in the dust to win 19-7 in the men’s cup final of the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival at the Wairiki Parish Grounds in Taveuni yesterday afternoon.

The Devo Babas team gained control and kept a dominant grip of the game from when it began and displayed a performance that gained the respect and vocal support of spectators watching around the field.

Team coach Salacieli Tabalailai spoke following the match, grateful for the win the team had achieved.

“We are so happy and I know this is the first time we’ve won a Fiji Bitter tournament in the past four years and we are so delighted in coming to Wairiki,” Tabalailai stated.

“I am really happy of the work shown by the boys since we went through such a difficult journey for us.”

He revealed the team nearly did not participate due to financial issues but a grateful Tabalailai acknowledged God, crediting the divine creator as their compass in guiding them through the tournament and eventually their win.

The team although from the province of Bua, was based in Nadi and he recalled how the team did not have anyone to train them as well.

Meanwhile, the side plans to participate in the Coral Coast 7s early next year at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
