The Viti Roofing Devo Baba’s rugby team is gearing up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, set to take place next week from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Preparation for the team has been in full swing, with this week marking the final stretch before they take on some of the best teams in the region.
Head coach Bill Ratute shared that the team has been preparing well and is excited about the challenges ahead.
“This is our second week of preparation, and it’s our last before the tournament kicks off,” said Ratute.
“Over the years, we’ve had some great games and matches against other local teams.”
The Devo Baba’s will be making their second appearance at the Coral Coast 7s after their debut last year.
Ratute reflected on the experience and how it has prepared the team for this year’s competition.
“Participating at the Coral Coast 7s is another level compared to the local tournaments we’ve been part of.”
“There are a lot of international teams, and the crowd and atmosphere are intense, it’s like watching a world rugby event,” he said.
This year’s tournament will feature 44 teams, 16 international and 16 locals.
Ratute emphasized the importance of the tournament in providing opportunities for his players.
“Playing against big teams like the national 7s team and the Drua gives our boys the chance to showcase their talent.”
The Devo Baba’s are determined to put on a strong performance over the three-day event and achieve their goals.
Ratute also expressed his gratitude to the team’s sponsors for their continued support.
“We want to thank all our sponsors who have been with us over the past four years,” he said.
For the Devo Baba’s, it’s not just about competing but also about learning, growing, and seizing opportunities on rugby’s big stage.
