The same urgency and passion given to social issues such as poverty should be given to environmental issues as everyone generates waste daily, says Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd CEO Amitesh Deo.

As we mark World Environment Day, he said most of the issues plaguing our nation were directly linked to the mismanagement of the environment.

“Let’s not operate with a mindset that issues relating to the environment can be shelved as an afterthought or a side-issue that you don’t need to be a part of and that is someone else’s problem to deal with,” Mr Deo said.

He said many failed to take any responsibility for their waste and while others saw it fit to only be part of clean-up campaigns and failed to address the issue by giving a holistic approach.

He said their staff had found urine-filled bottles on the roadside. World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5.

As part of its program, the NGO will have a roadside campaign #StandUpinSolidaritytoProtecttheEnvironment to inform the public of the impact of human actions on our environment and oceans. T

he campaign will take place on June 10 from Koronivia Rd junction to Kings Highway and is anticipated to end at the Rewa Bridge in Nausori.
