In a passionate plea, Amitesh Deo, founder and CEO of Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd and the Pacific Recycling Foundation, has called upon every Fijian to reflect on the alarming decline of civic pride in safeguarding public amenities and common spaces.

Mr Deo expressed concern over the pervasive issue of vandalism, emphasising that the lack of public awareness and understanding of its severity perpetuates the problem.

He recounted a recent incident involving the vandalism of an I-Recycle Hub bin, a crucial infrastructure designed to facilitate recyclable wastes and combat improper waste management.

“It is really sad that amenities such as this, which have been implemented to address the waste management crisis, are not being looked after,” he said.

He underscored the need for a collective shift in mindset and behaviour towards responsible waste management practices.

Highlighting the broader impact of vandalism, Mr Deo pointed out its prevalence in various public areas, including bus stops and corner shops.

He argued vandalism serves as a reflection of societal shortcomings in priorities, policies, and the education system.

While acknowledging the evident patriotism and pride during Fijian rugby events, Mr Deo urged for a similar commitment to cherishing public and community amenities.

He stressed the importance of recognising the tailor-made I-Recycle Hub bins as tools to instigate positive change in waste management practices.

In a call to action, Mr Deo emphasised that both communities and the public must take responsibility for safeguarding the environment and preserving public facilities.

He concluded by urging Fijians to collectively address the issue of vandalism and strive for a society that upholds civic pride in the face of environmental challenges.
