A man has claimed that officers at a police post in Labasa did not attend in a timely manner to his complaint about his burning farm in November last year because they had no vehicle.

Vinit Chand said his farm at Vunimoli was allegedly set alight by an arsonist at 11am but police didn’t respond until 9.30pm.

Mr Chand said he called the police station eight times during that period.

“They could not do much, they came home after 10 hours,” he said.

When he followed up after three days, Mr Chand claimed the officers who eventually attended to his case had not even registered it in their log book.

“It’s sad that the officers at the Labasa Police Station do not take cases such as this seriously,” said Mr Chand, adding that two months after the incident, no one has been charged.

Mr Chand lost about $5000 worth of property in the fire.

“Cane, sandalwood and cattle fencing were destroyed,” he said.

“I will not be replanting until I get the justice I deserve.”

In response, divisional crime officer Superintendent of Police Petero Tupici said the station officer would look into the matter as the investigation officer reported directly to him.
