Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua says a full investigation must be allowed to proceed following the death of an individual in military custody.

The Fiji Military Forces confirmed earlier today the Jone Vakarisi died while in their custody.

Mr Tikoduadua confirmed he had been made aware of the reports and noted that the Fiji Police Force has already launched an investigation.

“This is a serious matter, and I understand that the Fiji Police Force has confirmed that an investigation is now underway,” he said.

He stressed it would be inappropriate to comment further while inquiries are ongoing.

“At this stage, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the circumstances of the case while police inquiries are ongoing. The proper process must be allowed to take its course.”

The Defence Minister said any loss of life in custody is deeply concerning and requires full accountability.

“Any loss of life in such circumstances is a matter of grave concern. I expect the full cooperation of all relevant authorities with the police investigation.”

He added that adherence to the rule of law and due process must remain paramount.

“Accountability, adherence to the rule of law, and respect for due process must remain paramount.”

Mr Tikoduadua also urged the public to avoid speculation.

“I urge the public to allow the investigation to proceed without speculation or the spread of misinformation,” he said, adding that further comment should follow once police investigations are complete.
