For the first time, Fiji’s national deaf rugby players will wear the white jersey on an international stage.
The men’s and women’s teams are preparing to take part in the inaugural Pacific Rim Deaf Sevens Tournament, which will be held in Australia later this month.
The tournament, hosted by the Australian Deaf Rugby Union, will bring together top deaf rugby teams from the region.
Speaking to Fiji Rugby on Thursday Fiji head coach Tevita Rokoqiqi said both teams have been working hard in training and are now focused on their final preparations.
The players are in a one-week camp at the Pacific Theological College in Suva before they fly out next week.
“I’m grateful for the support from Fiji Rugby and the Fiji Sports Commission, enabling our national reps to camp together before we depart for Australia,” Rokoqiqi said.
He said the squads feature a mix of young talent and experienced players, all eager to represent Fiji on the international stage.
The tournament marks a major milestone for deaf rugby in the Pacific.
It is the first time such an event is being held, and it provides a platform for deaf athletes to showcase their skills and national pride.
This opportunity also highlights the growth of inclusive sports in Fiji and the region.
The teams are expected to leave for Australia early next week, with high hopes of making their mark in the historic tournament.
The Fiji’s men’s team will face Australia, Japan and Samoa, while the women’s side will play against Australia and a Barbarians team.
Meanwhile the competition will take place in Gold Coast, Australia from June 28-29.
