Businessman Div Damodar has stepped down from his role as Fiji’s honorary consul for the Russian Federation yesterday.

In an official statement, Mr Damodar said he had watched with deep concern the escalating crisis between Russia and Ukraine in the last week.

He assumed the role in 2019.

“I add my voice to that of the global community and call on the Russian Federation and Ukraine to de-escalate the situation and commence a peaceful dialogue process,” he said.

He said during his tenure it was his mission to explore and bridge constructive relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Fiji in the areas of economic/commerce and cultural initiatives of mutual interest.

“As honorary consul this position, while unpaid, was one that I saw value in and which allowed me to contribute directly to strengthening relations between our countries, especially in exploring commercial pursuits of mutual interest.

“However, recognising the events of the past week between Russia and Ukraine, and the firm position taken by my Government, I cannot in good conscience, continue to serve in this position.”

He remained optimistic that a resolution to the ongoing issues between the two countries could be resolved through peaceful and constructive dialogue.

“My thoughts and prayers remain with the citizens who have been affected in both countries, most especially our women and children who, yet again, become the unintended victims caught up in such atrocity.”

Questions sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and permanent secretary for the Prime Minister’s Office Yogesh Karan remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
