THE Fiji National University (FNU) is now working with insurance companies to determine the amount of damage to its UniStudio campus in Raiwai.
FNU vice-chancellor Professor Nigel Healey confirmed the campus was damaged during Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in February.
“Fiji National University is working with the insurance companies and engineers to finalise the damage and costs involved. Once this exercise is completed, we will explore our rebuilding options,” Prof Healey said.
“The different processes and procedures that need to be followed, projects such as this regrettably take time.”
The courses offered at the university’s UniStudio campus are Media and Journalism, Music, Film and Television and Graphics and Design.
Students enrolled in these programs have been relocated to the university’s Nasinu campus.
Prof Healey said this was because the building was deemed unsafe after Severe TC Winston.
“The academic term was restructured to give students an extended break immediately after TC Winston, to allow us to transfer and set up specialist equipment at our Nasinu campus.
“The UniStudio is a specialised campus and unfortunately we cannot relocate everything to Nasinu. We have managed to bring most of the items.”
The College of Humanities and Education, which the campus comes under, had also developed alternative ways to allow students in these areas of study to cope.
“We are working hard to ensure that our students’ learning is not affected, apart from the change in the timetable due to the extended holiday period post TC Winston.
“We have moved decisively to minimise the impact on our students and we are committed to both the safety of our students and ensuring that they can complete their studies as planned,” Prof Healey said.
