Cybersecurity remains one of Fiji’s most vulnerable areas, says Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua.

“Cybersecurity is an evolving threat and artificial intelligence, it continues to improve and become more sophisticated,” he said.

“Even the biggest economies of the world are targeted big time by it, and (we are) finding it very difficult catching up because those people who use it to do criminal activity are very well advanced in terms of what they are doing.

“So, Fiji, being a small country, this is a major challenge, and cybersecurity, the first thing we need to do really is work on the legislation; that’s what we are doing.”

Mr Tikoduadua added that his ministry was working with partners from the Ministry of Communication, who looked after the technical aspects of cybersecurity.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on the other hand, looked out for the security and criminal aspects.

“As I said earlier, cybersecurity is a threat that continues to evolve very quickly so we’re doing as much as we can to build capability but then these things, police hardly have the capability, at least the expertise, to handle it.

“This is why we either refer it to Australia, New Zealand because we do not have the ability.”

Concerns about Fiji’s susceptibility to cyber-related activities have been heightened recently as explicit images purporting to be Women’s Minister Lynda Tabuya was posted by a couple of websites.
