The Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital has space issues, not bed issues, says Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu.

Speaking on the commitment to improving health infrastructure in Fiji, Dr Lalabalavu said ministry officials had inspected the CWM Hospital’s kitchen which was in its final stage of completion, and were working on ongoing issues such as the lack of space in the hospital building.

“Space issue is something that we are trying to work on at the moment with what we have, and in doing so, I am happy to say that we are finalising details in terms of not only the beds, but the theatre as well,” Dr Atonio said.

“The ministry will be engaging with one in the private sector on the use of their theatre space so that some of our cases to the CWM Hospital are transferred there.

“In terms of space, we do have a master plan in place which the Australian Government has kindly assisted in.

“We also had a look at the kitchen facility which I’m sure is about to finish now. There will be a time period where in the next few months we will be discussing health workforce programs, while we do major works within the theatre in CWM.”
