CUVU College has adopted a new coaching approach this season, bringing in former Nadroga provincial and national representatives to strengthen its Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Deans campaign.
The move has paid dividends, with the Western Zone champions now preparing for their Under-18 quarterfinal clash against Nasinu Secondary School at Garvey Park in Tavua this Saturday.
Head coach Luke Salaba said the decision to include experienced former players in the coaching panel had transformed the team’s performance and mindset.
“In previous seasons, when only teachers coached the team, we would often fall short at the elimination or quarterfinal stage.
“This year we decided to do things differently by bringing in experts to work with the players in different areas of the game, including the forwards and backline,” Salaba said.
Salaba said the impact had been evident throughout the season.
“We have seen a change in the players’ attitude and a different approach to the game. The experience these former players bring has been invaluable.”
Former Nadroga representatives Jiuta Wainiqolo, Setefano Somoca and Emosi Vucago are among those assisting the coaching staff.
Cuvu showcased their exciting brand of rugby in last week’s quarterfinal victory over St John’s College, with their pace, physicality and structured play proving too much for their opponents.
The side will now be aiming to carry that momentum into Saturday’s knockout clash as they continue their quest for Deans glory.
