Keep the number of parliamentarians, Cabinet ministers and assistant ministers according to our economic strength.

This was a recommendation made by a former political party general secretary who made several submissions before the Electoral Law Reform Commission in Nadi on Monday.

Indicating he did not want to be named, the former political figure, who ran in the 1992 General Election, said the current size of Parliament was appropriate.

“I think 55 is a good number to maintain,” he said.

“Let us keep at that and in accordance with our current economic strengths. Let’s not go and borrow money around.

“We are already in debt and pushing it right now.”

When asked by the commission about the number of Cabinet ministers and assistant ministers that Fiji had, the Nadi resident said it was unnecessary.

“I think we should restrict the number of assistant ministers that we have.

“We can’t afford that. It is coming at a cost to the people.”

He said he had lost a number of “friends” in Parliament for expressing disappointment over its current state.

“I lost a lot of good friends because I disagreed with what they had done.

“It is a crazy situation they are in and that we have this number of independents moving into the Government.

“So, again, I think we need to restrict the number of assistant ministers.”
