Culture has hindered women’s ability to fully recognise their own potential and capabilities, says Yvonne Ravaga, secretary of Women in the Frontline organisation.

The group which involves Christian women from around the country, gathered in Labasa, Vanua Levu recently for the annual event, and it included an Australian-based Women of Courage team.

“This is the reason we have organised this annual event so women can come out, be part of this and we share with them issues of life so they can realise the strengths and greatness that exist within them, instilled in us by Jesus,” she said.

“Our culture has taught us that women can’t speak in meetings and have less authority with certain issues and that makes us feel like second-class citizens.

“But through these conferences, we are telling those who come that there is complete liberty, no hindrance in Jesus and you come as you are and be yourself with him in his presence.”

Ms Ravaga said they had organised six similar annual conferences, attended by women from all walks of life who shared their experiences in life.

“These events have allowed women to come forward and know that they are not alone, there is a friend, Jesus, whom they can cry to, speak to, and share their issues with.

“This is the first time we are having one on Vanua Levu and we have the biggest team from Taveuni and we’re glad that our sisters from Australia are also here to be part of it.
