A FAMILY fun day event themed, “celebrating Chinese culture, art and cuisine” was held at the Fiji Museum yesterday.

Families from various parts of Fiji flocked to the Fiji Museum. The Prakash family, who came all the way from Lautoka to visit family members earlier this week, heard of the event and decided to attend it and also learned a lot while enjoying the fun-filled and educational occasion.

The event was officially opened by the director of the Fiji Museum, Adi Mere Ratunibuabua, and director of the China Cultural Centre in Fiji Steve X Deng.

Mr Deng said various events were organised. Some of these were Chinese calligraphy — to write down their name with just a paint and brush, while some people were taught how to cook dumplings and learned how to use chopsticks.

“The people of Fiji needed to know more of China and its culture because more and more Chinese people are coming here and Fiji is doing more and more business with China,” Mr Deng said.

“I think the ordinary people need to know more and more of China.

“We want to introduce more and more Chinese culture here and at the same time we need to introduce more and more Fijian culture to China,” he said.

Event organiser and head of department for public relations marketing, Prakashni Sharma, said it was very important for all Fijians to attend this type of events as it enabled people to be educated and enlightened about other cultures other than our own.

“We believe that Fiji is a multicultural country and we should learn about different culture, different language and different history,” Ms Sharma said.
