Crumbling under water

I refer to the report in Friday’s The Fiji Times page 24 titled “Kiribati crumbles – Atoll starts to give way to effects of climate change.

” It gave me pain to even think about the fact that Kiribati has lost its ability to save its infrastructure from the impending sea level rise and impacts of climate change. The people of Kiribati are unsure of their future as rainfall has intensified and so has the effects of waterborne diseases. Their hopes lie on positive results from the COP21 meeting. There are many other atolls which face similar unrest.

The whole of the Pacific will have drastic effects resulting from climate change and sea level rise. PM Bainimarama has called on Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull to take sides with the Pacific and keep his side of the faith by making a commitment towards cutting carbon emissions. Let’s hope that Mr Turnbull sticks to this commitment and helps work out an amicable solution to reducing green- house gas emissions.

In sports, the fever surrounding the Melbourne Cup is getting bigger and better. Betting agencies would be making their way to the bank with the increased number of punters and those placing bets on their favourite horses. Only time will tell. May the best horse win! I wonder why doesn’t the favourite horse win? The Fiji Times provided readers with information about the 24 horses and their odds of winning. This will surely add flavour to the race for the top betting prize.

Hats off to the organisers for the successful organisation of the Nasinu Inter Primary School Tournament! The final between Nasinu Sangam Primary School and Rishikul Primary School had to be re- scheduled for next week on Wednesday bearing in mind the lack of lighting and child safety.

Bro Brij Singh and his executives deserve praise for getting the kids together and supervising them as they displayed their soccer skills.

The number of Fijians plying their trade in the Super Rugby 2016 has increased, a positive approach as Fiji prepares for Japan 2019. Looking at Australia and NZ majority of their players have been selected from the Super Rugby competition because the level of competition is high. I hope more players will follow suit and join the Super Rugby franchise competition. At least come 2019, there may not be any room for complaints and excuses.
