Zoning of agriculture crops is one of the priorities set out by the Agriculture Ministry under the new government.

This was revealed by the ministry permanent secretary Dr Vinesh Kumar.

“We want to zone certain commodities because some crops have certain advantages when grown in a particular area,” Dr Kumar said.

He said weather, market and soil type are some of the factors behind the zoning of crops concept.

“We want to do a feasibility study because we are looking at reducing our imports.

“We are working on a number of crops to make it more commercially viable.”

He said cassava was one of the crops that had a huge potential and the ministry was looking to streamline its production.

“A lot of farmers are growing cassava here and there, we are looking at some designated areas for it to be grown.

“We also import a lot of milk and rice. The ministry is putting efforts so that we can increase the local production of these commodities,” Dr Kumar said.
