BRED Bank sponsored the first prize award in the High School category for the 2023 World GIS Day Competition organised by the Ministry for Lands and Mineral Resources.
GIS (Geographic Information System technologies) Day celebrates the contributions of GIS professionals worldwide. The theme selected for local celebrations this year was “Geospatial — The Future of Fiji”.
BRED Bank CEO Thierry Charras-Gillot said sustainability and environmental protection are key to BRED Bank’s strategy and he is proud to support this by sponsoring the first prize laptop for the students participating in the competition.
“While our support will help in creating awareness of this unique profession and career path, we are also happy that the Laptop will be a valuable resource to the winning student in their studies for assignments and research,” he said.
Ministry of Lands & Mineral Resources Principal Geospatial Officer Vilimone Koiroko Raqona said the secondary school category had more than 20 model submissions this year.
“This was an opportunity to understand and learn the perceptions and ideas of our children in areas of sustainability, renewable resources, conservation and future planning,” he said.
The 2023 World GIS Day Celebrations were held on November 30 at the Civic Centre Lower Auditorium.
