Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services permanent secretary Dr James Fong has returned two negative tests for COVID-19 during his quarantine.
Dr Fong was among medical and health ministry staff who had to go into quarantine following the detection of COVID-19 in the ministry.
He was a potential primary contact for a medical team that contracted COVID-19.
“I have tested negative twice now during my quarantine, on day one and day four, my being at home is simply a precaution,” Dr Fong said during his COVID update announcement from his home last night.
“I also want to thank the members of the Department of Information who have helped me record this message without coming into contact with anyone.”
The PS also commended the work carried out by the team on the ground.
“We say our health teams serve on the ‘frontline’ for a reason. Even when we follow the rules and employ proper PPE, there is always a risk of exposure in the line of duty,” Dr Fong said.
“I want to thank my teams who are continuing to guard the wellbeing of our people.
“Their service and sacrifice have never mattered more.”
